On Track: Mayor Michael Ludwig Sends Off the Wiener Linien Team to the TRAM Driver World Championship

Just days before the world’s first-ever TRAM Drivers World Championship, Wiener Linien drivers Elisabeth Urbanitsch and Florijan Isaku were officially honored in the Red Salon of Vienna City Hall. Mayor Michael Ludwig presented the duo with a historic track switch lever – a symbol of the paths Wiener Linien paves every day toward a climate-friendly future.

Vienna – Capital of Public Transport

“Vienna is one of the most livable cities in the world, thanks in no small part to our outstanding public transport system. Our drivers demonstrate their skill and professionalism every single day. Elisabeth and Florijan are truly world-class and will represent Vienna with excellence at the TRAM World Championship,” said Mayor Ludwig.

For the driver duo, the opportunity is both an honor and a highlight. “We’re not only representing Wiener Linien, but the entire city – and really, all of Austria,” said Isaku. Urbanitsch added: “This will be something very special. I’m excited to connect with colleagues from across the globe – and of course, we’re aiming to bring home the win.”

Vienna in Championship Spirit

The TRAM Driver World Championship will take place on September 13 in front of City Hall, as part of a major public transport festival. Twenty-five teams from around the world will compete in a series of skill challenges, cheered on by more than 50,000 visitors on Rathausplatz and a global audience via livestream. The festival will also feature a large Wiener Linien showcase, food stands, children’s activities, and much more. Admission is free.
